Riding Lessons

Riding lessons are held in one of our two indoor schools.

Our friendly, professional instructors are qualified up to BHSI level and regularly compete in affiliated competitions. This means we can ensure lessons are tailored to your needs, whether it is learning the basics, building your skills and confidence, or specialised competition training for dressage, jumping or showing.

Our horses and ponies range from confidence-giving cobs to advanced school masters and will be selected based on your ability and requirements. Alternatively, you are more than welcome to bring your own horse – we get real satisfaction from helping both rider and horse improve!

Beginners and New Clients

Although it’s exciting, we know that your first lesson can be a bit nerve-wracking too. Don’t worry, your first lesson will be a ½ hour private or semi-private session, so that the instructor can work with you one-on-one to give you all the help and support you need and assess your abilities.

Private and Semi-Private Lessons

Private and semi-private lessons are available if you would like one-to-one tuition and provide an opportunity to focus on your specific needs.

Stable Management

Stable management lessons can be structured to help you work towards a qualification or simply enable you to learn more about the needs and care of our equine friends. Training for all BHS qualifications can be provided, including the Challenge Awards Certificate.

Group Lessons

Once you’ve got to grips with the basics, group lessons are a great way to improve your skills, build your confidence and have fun too! These lessons are grouped according to the rider’s ability and age and run at regular times each week. We are also happy to book group lessons for parties and families.

Young Children

To help young children (four to six year olds) start enjoying riding we offer 30 minute, fun lessons that include a range of confidence building exercises. Parents are expected to stay and help and teddies are welcome too! Once young riders are feeling happy and confident, the Pony Club is an excellent way to continue learning and having fun both in and out of the saddle, and you don’t need your own pony to join! Visit our Pony Club page for more information.

Training & Tuition

We provide training in both the riding and horse care elements of the following BHS qualifications:
Horse Owner’s Certificate • Stage 1 • Stage 2 • Preliminary Teaching Test (PTT)

Whether you want to pursue a career with horses or just want to improve your knowledge and skills, the internationally recognised BHS qualifications provide a structured programme of learning.

Training for Stages 1 and 2 and the Horse Owner’s Certificate run continuously throughout the year to allow individuals to train at their own pace. PTT training courses begin in September each year. Contact us to enrol.

Assessment for the Horse Owner’s Certificate takes place here at Longfield. The BHS qualifications are assessed at other local centres, but we can help you find a suitable examination centre when the time comes.

Full-Time Working Students

If you would like a career working with horses, becoming a full-time working student is an excellent way to gain hands-on experience whilst working towards formal qualifications. At Longfield, you will work on the yard alongside our experienced staff and receive ongoing training that covers all aspects of your qualification.

At Longfield, we welcome horse lovers of all ages and abilities and offer tuition in all aspects of riding, stable management and horse care. In addition to being a riding school, we are an official pony club centre.

We hold regular clinics and courses that focus on building both the horse and rider’s skills and confidence in their chosen area(s). Keep an eye on our Events page for dates and details.
